While Beachgoers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Captures Beach Patrol Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, heard cracking sounds echoing across the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Exiting her home, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a couple who had run up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. It was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. It was just him moving in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that big kit and unshod … He moved towards something that surely every part of you would signal you to move in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully maximum effort racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The photo that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous acts of valour in the following of the tragic event.
