The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
