The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.
For the first time in 25 years, every region of California is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement arrives after difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.
An Update Reveals An Absence of Dryness
A recent update from the national drought tracker illustrated that the entire state is without drought or abnormal dryness. This change was driven by a period of above-normal rainfall that topped up water storage sites like the state's largest lakes well above their typical levels.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a weather expert.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
Achieving this status involved intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in recent years, causing extensive inundation, power outages, and deaths. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 washed away those final dry conditions.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern
But, authorities caution that drought-free conditions should not be confused with having no water worries. Latest data of the high-elevation snow place it at only about 70% of the typical level.
This snowpack, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for future water availability. State experts stress that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the months ahead.
“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, the next challenge is to maintaining this positive water situation for the months to come.
