"See such work. Observe this instance of ethnic cleansing," a combatant cheers.

He beams as he points the video equipment on his own face and his companion militiamen, their Rapid Support Forces identification clearly shown: "These people will all perish this way."

The combatants are celebrating a massacre that humanitarian officials believe killed in excess of 2,000 individuals in the Sudanese urban center of al-Fashir in recent weeks.

A City Isolated from the Outside

After maintaining the community under blockade for approximately an extended period, from late summer the militia advanced to consolidate its dominance and blockade the leftover inhabitants.

Satellite images demonstrate that fighters started to erect a enormous berm - a raised sand barrier - encircling the edges of el-Fasher, blocking entry points and preventing relief supplies.

An witness who communicated said he had observed "multiple of our kin being massacred - they were assembled in a single location and everyone murdered."

RSF Officers Try to Implement Reputation Management

Following the events that ensued from the atrocity, RSF chief admitted that his troops had committed "violations" and announced the events would be examined.

Among those arrested was following a report documenting his killings. Carefully choreographed and modified footage shared on the paramilitary's formal messaging platform depict the commander being escorted into a cell at a detention facility on the edges of the city.

Meanwhile, the RSF and connected social media accounts began attempting to reframe the narrative.

Updates presenting its militiamen providing supplies to inhabitants were disseminated by several accounts, while the militia's communications team released numerous recordings purporting to demonstrate the humane treatment of army detainees.

Regardless of the online initiative being deployed by the militia, their conduct in al-Fashir have sparked international outrage.
