Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
