The veteran filmmaker has evolved into beyond being a documentarian; he is a brand, an unparalleled production entity. With each new documentary series arriving on the small screen, everybody wants a part of him.

The filmmaker completed “countless podcast appearances”, he says, nearing the end of his marathon promotional journey featuring four dozen cities, dozens of preview events and innumerable conversations. “With podcasts numbering in the hundreds of millions, I feel I’ve participated in a substantial portion.”

Happily Burns is a force of nature, equally articulate in interviews as he is prolific while filmmaking. At seventy-two has appeared at locations ranging from prestigious venues to The Joe Rogan Experience to talk about a career-defining series: this historical epic, an extensive six-episode, twelve-hour film project that dominated ten years of his career and premiered currently on public television.

Defiantly Traditional Approach

Similar to traditional cooking in today’s rapid-consumption era, The American Revolution is defiantly traditional, evoking memories of historical documentary classics than the era of digital documentaries and podcast series.

Burns and his collaborators plus scripting partner Geoffrey Ward drew upon countless written sources and other historical materials. The extended filming period proved beneficial concerning availability. Filming occurred in studios, at historical sites using online technology, a tool embraced throughout the health crisis. The director describes the experience with performer Josh Brolin, who scheduled a brief window in Atlanta to perform his role as the revolutionary leader prior to departing to subsequent commitments.

Brolin is joined by multiple distinguished artists, established Hollywood talent, Domhnall Gleeson, Amanda Gorman, Jonathan Groff, household names and rising talent, celebrated film and stage performers, Damian Lewis, Laura Linney, Tobias Menzies, Edward Norton, David Oyelowo, Mandy Patinkin, small and big screen veterans, and many others.

Burns adds: “Honestly, this could represent the finest ensemble ever assembled for any movie or television show. They do an extraordinary service. Their celebrity status wasn’t the criteria. I became frustrated when someone asked, ‘So why the celebrities?’. I explained, ‘These are artists.’ They are among the world’s best performers and they animate historical material.”

Nuanced Narrative

Nevertheless, the lack of surviving participants, photography and newsreels required the filmmakers to rely extensively on the written word, integrating individual perspectives of numerous historical characters. This methodology permitted to present viewers beyond the prominent leaders of the founders plus numerous additional crucial to understanding, numerous individuals never even had a portrait painted.

The filmmaker also explored his particular enthusiasm for maps and spatial representation. “Maps fascinate me,” he notes, “and there are more maps throughout this series versus earlier productions throughout my entire career.”

During the second installment, scholar Alan Taylor notes: “The primary misunderstanding concerning independence struggle centers on assuming it constituted a unifying experience for colonists. This ignores the truth that colonists battled fellow colonists.”

Nuanced Understanding

According to his perspective, the revolutionary narrative that “generally is overwhelmed by emotionalism and wistful remembrance and is incredibly superficial and insufficiently honors the historical reality, all contributors and the incredible violence of it.

Taylor maintains, an uprising that declared the world-changing idea of the unalienable rights of people; a bloody domestic struggle, separating rebels and supporters; and a worldwide engagement, the fourth in a series of struggles among European powers for dominance in the New World.
