Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The criminal group stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, according to a statement.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to create fear.
Community members informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into nearby bushland.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to seek ransom payments or leverage deals with the government.
The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge troubling the locality, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.
Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
