Powerful winter gusts caused walls to collapse upon fragile shelters sheltering Palestinians uprooted by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than four individuals. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that continue after over 24 months of intense bombardment and severe shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides No Relief from Severe Weather

Although a ceasefire has been in effect from October, aid groups state that Palestinians broadly lack the adequate housing necessary to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the victims, reported on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the local health authority stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has enabled us to witness death in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Tent Collapse

According to the medical center, three people of a one household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall collapsed onto their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. At least five additional people were injured in the incident.

Their relatives on that day began removing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for survivors.

Humanitarian Efforts and Ongoing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as nutrition and sanitation items across Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of Palestinians live in makeshift tents because their houses were turned into ruins over the course of the hostilities. Aid groups say an insufficient amount of building supplies are reaching Gaza under the truce.

Casualty Figures Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, says over four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by gunfire and their bodies taken to hospitals after the ceasefire began. The ministry maintains comprehensive fatality records that are considered generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that at least 100 minors below eighteen years old – sixty boys and 40 girls – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began because of military operations, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, artillery fire and employment of bullets. These numbers, he explained, represented incidents where enough information had been compiled to justify documentation, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He noted that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have decreased' during the truce, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now calls quiet would be considered a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while enduring shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently required during the winter months. It’s the third winter after the war between Israel and Hamas began on 7 October 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and murdered approximately 1,200 people and took hostage 251 more into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been fatally injured in Israel’s retaliatory offensive.
