American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and additional factors.

More than 3,000 American flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the closure began.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.
