Home Secretary the government has presented what is being called the largest changes to address unauthorized immigration "in recent history".

The proposed measures, patterned after the tougher stance enacted by Denmark's centre-left government, establishes asylum approval provisional, narrows the appeal process and includes visa bans on nations that block returns.

Temporary Asylum Approvals

Individuals approved for protection in the UK will only be allowed to stay in the country for limited periods, with their situation reassessed at two-and-a-half-year intervals.

This means people could be sent back to their home country if it is deemed "stable".

This approach mirrors the method in the Scandinavian country, where asylum seekers get 24-month visas and must submit new applications when they terminate.

Officials says it has begun assisting people to go back to Syria willingly, following the toppling of the Syrian government.

It will now begin considering compulsory deportations to Syria and other countries where people have not regularly been deported to in the past few years.

Protected individuals will also need to be living in the UK for two decades before they can seek settled status - raised from the present 60 months.

At the same time, the authorities will introduce a new "employment and education" visa route, and prompt protected persons to obtain work or begin education in order to transition to this route and qualify for residency sooner.

Only those on this employment and education program will be able to petition for family members to accompany them in the UK.

Human Rights Law Overhaul

The home secretary also plans to end the process of allowing numerous reviews in asylum cases and introducing instead a single, consolidated appeal where all grounds must be raised at once.

A fresh autonomous adjudication authority will be established, staffed by experienced arbitrators and backed by preliminary guidance.

To do this, the authorities will present a legislation to modify how the family unity rights under Clause 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights is applied in immigration proceedings.

Exclusively persons with direct dependents, like children or mothers and fathers, will be able to remain in the UK in coming years.

A greater weight will be placed on the societal benefit in deporting overseas lawbreakers and individuals who arrived without authorization.

The government will also narrow the application of Clause 3 of the ECHR, which bans undignified handling.

Ministers claim the present understanding of the legislation permits repeated challenges against refusals for asylum - including violent lawbreakers having their expulsion halted because their medical requirements cannot be addressed.

The anti-trafficking legislation will be tightened to curb eleventh-hour exploitation allegations employed to prevent returns by compelling refugee applicants to disclose all applicable facts early.

Ceasing Welfare Provisions

The home secretary will revoke the mandatory requirement to supply asylum seekers with support, terminating assured accommodation and weekly pay.

Support would remain accessible for "individuals in poverty" but will be withheld from those with employment eligibility who do not, and from individuals who break the law or resist deportation orders.

Those who "purposefully render themselves penniless" will also be rejected for aid.

As per the scheme, refugee applicants with assets will be required to help pay for the cost of their accommodation.

This resembles that country's system where protection claimants must use savings to pay for their lodging and officials can seize assets at the frontier.
