Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
