The original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the business with his partner, disclosed how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within a personal series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Parent Company

The recent development deepens the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

Both founders maintain that Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen announced via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options and additional components.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Previous Activism plus Current Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.

The new dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that was first established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".

Management Changes plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen revealed that he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.

The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
