Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of 2025 Earns a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
