A comprehensive search and recovery effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of lost sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Military Rescue Operations Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and search planes to find the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of nine total crew members, as stated by a military release.

The vessels had been expected to arrive in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to the Nation

Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through repeated power outages across the country.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," a representative for the convoy stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Mission

Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the island.

That boat, called "Granma 2.0" in reference to the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, drugs, infant formula, bikes and provisions.

Wider Political Context

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

International organizations have since highlighted ""critical" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Diplomatic pressure have increased lately, with comments from various representatives highlighting the delicate nature of bilateral relations.

In response to recent proposals, a prominent government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to discover the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the sailors.

To date, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
